Project

This morning, Bongo was grooming the kittens so vigorously that the sound of it literally woke me up. Lola was sleeping peacefully at the foot of my bed, and didn't stir, even when I turned on the light and got up to go check on the kittens. There was so much slurping coming from the box, I was slightly alarmed by what I might find.

It was a festival of grooming! The kittens lay on their backs looking blissed out, while Bongo methodically licked at each of them with enough force to rock their little bodies back and forth. Everyone in the box seemed utterly entranced, but Bongo most of all. I've never seen him undertake a project that lasted more than 30 seconds, and judging from the spikiness of the kittens' fur, he'd been at this a good long time.

After all was said and done, not only were the kittens very clean, they also seemed quite invigorated. There was more movement in the box than I've ever seen before. I brewed a cup of coffee, and sat there watching while they belly-crawled around like giant furry frogs.

Boy, I'm loving the progress here!

You are SO lucky. I had my one cat... brought in another cat that was going to be put to sleep, a cat that was older than mine. I'd fed him for years so he'd smelled my cat on me, my cat had smelled him on me... and despite a nice, slow introduction, they've been at each other's throats since. It's warfare-- better some days and worse on others.

I got two kittens last year and that helped defuse the tension... but one kitten didn't make it. The other is now after the 14 1/2 year old all the time and they are friends... but Lilly needs a kitten to play with. I got a younger female cat-- but she has attacked each of the other cats (another nice, long slow introduction) and now is living in the garage until I can find a home for her.

Or maybe it's just me. I don't seem to have good luck on the multi-cat thing.

I worried about Bongo attacking the kittens but he seems to be coping well. Or maybe he's just blissed out on the smell of that lactating female! That's what the synthetic pheromone stuff is (that we use all the time to try and keep peace in my house)-- the smell of a lactating mother cat!

It looks like one of the kittens is more of a deep gray than black. Or is that just the picture? Have you figured out the sexes yet?
